THE IMPORTED NIGERIANS (I)
Charity they say begins at home but in the case of Nigeria everything starts outside of our dear country. I’m writing this to let everyone knows the how we have contributed to the destruction of this dear entity called Nigeria individually and collectively.
As I pointed out that ‘charity begins at home’ in the beginning what I am trying to bring out of this piece is that, for this country to develop and to be par with her contemporaries we must start from ourselves and particularly from our individual homes so to say. My father used to tell me that during their own youthful days every products and commodities being produced in Nigeria is their choice because then, they are very proud of their identity and there is no way you will see them and you will not notice the Nigerianity in them regardless of their ethnic or tribe.
Economically, it has been proven beyond reasonable doubt that for any nation to record success and to be viable her exportation of goods and services must supersede that of importation which implies that the citizens will benefit more when export is more than import because it will create room for employment for the citizens and also they will have more to spend to better their lives. By saying this we can easily pointed out that in Nigeria the rate at which importation is more than exportation is very alarming to the extent that we also import TOOTHPICK. Don’t let me waste much time on this as I very sure that you are all aware of it.
It is worthy of note to mention the Nigerian Textile Industries who happens to be the largest employer of labour in the country in the yester years is now in total collapse. Had these industries functioning to their optimum capacity, many of our teeming youth who are being engaged in nefarious activities by our politicians would have been gainfully employed. But we must know that the demise of our textiles industries is as a result of some disgruntled elements in this country who are hell bent in making the entire country their empire that kick-start the dwindling fortunes of the noble industries by importing the same Ankara and other textile materials that are also being produced locally into the country which eventually leads to the almost-total collapse of the industry. And the questions will arise as what is the Nigeria Customs Service doing? We all know the answer.
Another area is the health sector of the country which is also fighting for survival because the hospital themselves are not more than a morgue and we all know that the reason behind this is because many of the gadget and equipments that should have been installed for the treatment of patients are nowhere to be found. And you should know why the few favoured travelled abroad for treatment even if they have little headache. The implication of this is that our home-grown medical practitioners are being discredited which has made many of them seeking greener pastures elsewhere. India and China can testify to the number of Nigerian patients being treated of one ailment or the other in the countries and the amount of dollars being generate to these countries to say the least while our own health sector at home is in shambles.
In the area of sports, our local soccer which was ranked among the best in those glorious past years is now a shadow of itself and you can see why majority of Nigerian pay thousands of naira for subscription just to watch Barclays Premier League and had our own league is properly managed, the money being generated by this imported league should have been injected into our own league there creating more rooms for employment opportunities not to talk of the viewers who could not do without their darling clubs playing every weekends.
